We Are Building a Robotic Bio-Computer, Based on the Functional Neuroanatomy of the Human Brain, and Which Can Speak, Reason, Read, Understand Language, Experience Self-Consciousness and Human Emotions, Think Creatively, and Physically Interact with the Environment.

R. Gabriel Joseph, Ph.D.

Dr. R. Gabriel Joseph pioneered the field of human neuroscience and began his scientific career in the 1970s when he proved and published what were then, major discoveries: (1) neuroplasticity and recovery of function in the primate brain, (2) the hormonal basis of sex differences, (3) early environmental influences on primate brain neuronal-synaptic connections and neural-perceptual development in primate, (4) the effects of enriched vs deprived environmental influences on intelligence, memory, learning and curiosity (see, for example, Joseph 1978, 1980, Joseph et al. 1978, 1979; Joseph & Gallagher, 1980; Joseph & Casagrande 1978, 1980; Casagrande & Joseph 1978, 1980).

Dr. Joseph went on to make numerous scientific discoveries in the fields of quantum physics, genetics, and the evolution and development of the brain, language, vision, and human consciousness; and pioneered the concept of "neural networks" which he detailed in his 1982 monograph, the Neuropsychology of Development, and which was featured on the cover of the prestigious Journal of Clinical Psychology, and reprinted by Harvard Medical School and other universities.

Dr. Joseph first became interested in the field of "Artificial Intelligence" and robotics in the 1970s, and by the early 1980s had begun designing prototypes of a computer which would be based on the human brain.

In the early 1980s, Dr. Joseph also evaluated numerous neurosurgery patients referred by the neurology staff at Yale Medical Center, including those whose brains had been implanted with electrodes, or who undergone "split-brain" surgery, and published several studies about the duality of consciousness, and neuroplasticity, following corpus callosotomy, in adults and children.

In the late 1980s Dr. Joseph founded the "Brain Research Laboratory", and conducted numerous studies in neuroplasticity and the implant of devices, of his own design, into rodent brains. In part, this work was based on neurophysiological and electrophysiological studies he had performed in the 1970s, in which electrodes were inserted into specific regions of the rat cerebrum, in order to control behavior and arousal.

In 1990, he was appointed to the California Superior Court's Panel of Forensic Experts, as an Expert in Brain Functioning, and was Court-appointed to over 500 cases. The United States and California Depts. of Disability also referred over 2,000 patients suffering from brain injury, to Dr. Joseph, for examination.

In the 1990s, he also conducted numerous studies in neuroplasticity and neuroregeneration, and was among the very first to generate new neurons via the stimulation of fetal neural-olfactory substance and which resulted in several patent applications.

Dr. Joseph has been invited to speak at University of California Berkeley, University of Geneva, University of Japan, and at several "Silicon Valley" tech companies, including Hewlett Packard where he lectured to an audience of several hundred engineers on the subject of "bio-computing."

He has also published several "best selling" highly technical neuroscience books, in which he detailed the functional neuroanatomy of the brain, and which received the highest praise in peer reviewed scientific journals:

"One of the most astonishing books of our time." -Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society

"First rate... Among the best... Deserving of a place on the shelf of any neuropsychologist, neuropsychiatrist, or behavioral neurologist." -the journal of Neuropsychiatry.

"The finest analysis of... brain phenomena that we have to date."- The New England Review of Books

"Joseph is to mind brain studies as Asimov and Sagan are to the physical sciences." -Choice

"An intense, in-depth examination of the relationship between neuroanatomy and associated behavior, personality, thinking, psychosis, and emotions." 4 Stars! Highly recommended. -Medical Review Journal

"Brilliant." -Choice

"Excellent... Comprehensive... Exceptional... Enthusiastically recommended!" -Health Sciences Review Journal

"Astounding... astounding... [Joseph] deserves our admiration." -Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology
